Warner Bros. states that it is focusing on "transforming" its biggest franchises into service games
Warner Bros. is aiming to change the strategy of its major franchises, including "Harry Potter," "Game of Thrones," "DC," primarily focusing on Batman, and "Mortal Kombat," by transforming them into service games. The company's CEO, Zaslav, expressed the intention to shift the emphasis from traditional console and PC platforms to continuous gameplay through live services, multiplatform, and free-to-play extensions.
"We aim to attract more players spending more time on different platforms, altering release cycles from three to four years to more flexible and long-term. Our goal is to increase engagement and monetization at higher levels," noted Zaslav.
The company marked a successful 2023 with standout releases such as the RPG "Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy." Within the first two weeks of its release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in February, the game became Europe's best-selling title, selling over 12 million copies. Zaslav also announced the release of "Mortal Kombat 1," which gained popularity and sold close to three million copies.
